With just the goal difference separating these two sides, Saturday’s match promises to be a humdinger as both are looking to catch up with current log leaders Supersport United.
The first round of this encounter resulted in a dull goalless draw, both teams at that time were struggling for form and surely the new coaches didn’t want to take risks. But now, they both know that if they are going to challenge Supersport for the league title, they will have to unleash the shackles and go for maximum points. Both coaches understand that a draw or anything less will kick them out of contention.
Let’s take a look at the teams:
Mamelodi Sundowns,
This is a team that’s known as the “Real Madrid” of South African football, not because of their style of play, but because like Real Madrid, they are not afraid to splash their cash to buy any player they wish to buy. At the beginning of the season, they brought in the likes of Matthew Pattison, Elias Pelembe, Felix Katongo and Mabhuti Khanyeza just to name a few. Unfortunately they also brought in a new coach, the Bulgarian Historic. That of course resulted in a slow start for them as the players and new coach were still getting to know each other.
They probably have the strongest frontline in the PSL at the moment, with the likes of Bafana striker Katlego Mphela and Mabhuti Khenyeza. And they’ve strengthened their midfield with the acquisition of Franklin Cale from Ajax Cape Town. So they are generally a team with the best players as Chiefs coach put it earlier this week.
Danger man: Katlego Mphela
Here’s a man who’s come from being a ‘nobody’ type of striker to being the number one striker in South Africa. He scores week in week out. Currently topping the goal scorer’s charts, Katlego will look to extend his lead at the topand what better way to do that than against Kaizer Chiefs?
Kaizer Chiefs,
Arguably the biggest football team in South Africa, big in the sense of their decorated trophy cabinet and in the sense that they have the most fans in the country. Chiefs are known for their big match temperament. Their players always rise to the occasion. And besides, they know exactly that if they fail to beat Sundowns, they title hopes are over.
Fortunately Chiefs come into this game at the peak of their form, they’ve won 4 of their last five league matches. The players are finally playing to their coaches’ instructions as opposed to the beginning of the season when they were finding it hard to carry out his tactics.
Danger man: Reneilwe Letsholonyane
This boy is probably currently the best central midfielder in the country. He is your Alex Song type of midfielder; he’ll win you most of the balls and also become a threat going forward. Despite playing a defensive role, his style of play has seen him bag a couple of vital goals this season. This man’s confidence is sky high and should a threat on Saturday against Sundowns.
Verdict:
Looking at both teams form, Chiefs come out tops, look at the teams on paper, Mamelodi Sundowns have the best team. So it’s Form vs. Best Players and my common sense tells me form will come out tops. Chiefs traveled to Pretoria a few months ago and they were humiliated by Supersport United in the night dubbed as Johannesburg vs. Pretoria, so they will want to change this in a Stadium that will be field by Chiefs’ supporters.
Prediction:
Kaizer Chiefs 2 – 1 Mamelodi Sundowns

nice background info on both teams. I agree with the prediction with an addition that it won’t be an easy win at all for chiefs. and if they don’t take their chances as they did with Ajax they might pay dearly.
