English Premiership

fiver1. Upset of the week

No hard decision here. Burnley’s win against Everton was the frontrunner. But Liverpool’s capitulation at Anfield against Aston Villa will definitely leave Reds fans scratching their heads. This is Liverpool’s second loss for the season. Remember, they lost two games last season and couldn’t win the title – sure to put a dent in their title aspirations this season. Fair enough Manchester United lost four games last season, but they didn’t draw 11 like the Reds. This was Villa’s first win at Anfield in eight years, and you could tell from the first goal (the own goal from Lucas) that it wasn’t Liverpool’s night.

2. Goal of the week

There aren’t many contenders for goal of the week. Wayne Rooney’s header to open the scoring for Man Utd was ferocious, and the goal from Burnely’s Wade Elliot was pure class. Carlton Cole’s goal, though, is deserving of the score of the week for his magnificent 22-yard strike on the turn. Do me a favour and watch it if you haven’t seen it. If you have, watch it again – it really is that good.

3. Bore of the week

Obviously the lone 0-0 draw of the weekend is worthy of this award. Stoke City met Birmingham City at St Andrews. No clear chances, 50% possession each way, tons of shots off target. Real wake-me-up-when-they-done stuff.

4. Fight-back of the week

There’s no denying that the comeback by Spurs against West Ham was brilliant. But Sunderland’s gritty fight-back at home against Blackburn wins this. The two goals from Kenwayne Jones were just sublime and Sunderland spent most of the final quarter camped in their own box scrapping and defending until the whistle.

5. Quote of the week

For honour in defeat – very rare in the Premier League these days. Fulham boss Roy Hodgson: “In the end we lost and deservedly so. Looking at this game over 90 minutes I thought Chelsea deserved to win it … They have the technique and pace to cause problems for the opposition and they caused problems for us today and we lost the game. They didn’t pepper our goal with shots but they had control of the game after half-time and we didn’t have enough in our locker.”
