Absa Premiership, Kaizer Chiefs

This is ridiculous! I just read this on Kickoff.com, Saddam is no longer Kaizer Chiefs‘ number one supporter.

For some of you who don’t know, almost every South African football club has a number one supporter. Apparently these guys get free season tickets and they eventually become the face of the club’s supporters. Something really ridiculous if you ask me because as much as everyone thinks they are the number one fans, there could be someone else who travels to every game his club plays, with the only difference being he pays for his tickets and doesn’t get any media attention.

Anyway, politics and I don’t really click, so I will stay out of them for now. Although I must concede it would be really cool to be appointed as a number one fan for my club given all the perks the title comes with. But on a second thought, I’d rather not, especially if it means I always have to make funny faces to the camera and pretend to be making a prayer before the game starts or open a bible etc. I go to stadiums to watch the game and enjoy it, not to show off, besides I never really liked this whole thing of number one supporters, it’s absolute nonsense! it’s nothing more than a cheap marketing mechanism clubs use to get more card holding supporters, which translates to more revenue for them.

So, back to the Saddam story, it’s claimed that Kaizer Chiefs dethroned him as the Vodacom Challenge ambassador after he spoke to the media without the clubs permission, You see, it seems you also become property of that particular club, not cool, I’d rather be an unknown fan.

Saddam refuted the claims and told this to kickoff.com

“I don’t want to be a Mugabe (Zimbabwe President),” quips the jokeful Saddam. “Give others a chance,” he says.

“From 2006, we have been saying another Khosi needs a chance. Yes, I’m not going to be the ambassador of the team during this year’s Vodacom Challenge and Machaka will be the man.

“He’s been nominated by lots of people to take over as the Number One supporter. We must support the man. Radio stations call me, but I give them Machaka’s number, because they must speak to him about the Vodacom Challenge.

“I will continue to support the team, but it is time for the new generation to bring together the supporters. “Everyone is a number 1 supporter in my opinion, but we need a driver and that’s Machaka now,” Saddam says.

So, I guess congratulations are in order for the clubs new ‘number one’ supporter, Machaka. I say happy slaving :)

Oh, sorry couldn’t find a picture of the new ‘number one’ supporter, he’s not on Google yet, LOL

I’m out, till next time…
