South Africa 2 -- 3 Spain

Spain ousted South Africa with a goal from Xabi Alonso in extra time to claim third place in this year’s Confederations Cup.

The game was tightly contested in the 90 minutes and Katlego Mphela proved all his critics wrong when he scored a brace for Bafana Bafana to take the match extra time. Another player who clinched a brace was Spain’s Guiza before the winning goal from a Xabi Alonso well taken free kick.

Even though Bafana lost, they will go down knowing that they have risen to the occasion and put up good or rather excellent performances against the world’s best teams. So really nothing lost from a South African point of view but a lot has been learned by the players.
