It’s funny how South African star Steven Pienaar always tends to get injured exactly a match before he has to travel down to South Africa to play for Bafana Bafana.
Steven Pienaar who currently plies his trade in Europe’s biggest league, the English Premiership, is currently in the form of his life for his club Everton. Since returning from injury, Pienaar has featured in almost every game for Everton this year, constantly standing out as one of Everton’s best performers.
Funny enough though, of late, in his current form, Steven has been reported injured exactly a match before Bafana faces Chile in an international friendly tommorrow afternoon. My thinking is that Everton don’t want to risk losing one of their best players to injury in this crucial time of the league, but on the other hand the player might also not want to get injured as he may lose his place in the first team. Ok, fair enough, but isn’t it high time the Bafana players actually started showing passion and will to play for their country? The World Cup is around the corner and we still have players that conveniently get injured when they have pitch for the Bafana camp.
Maybe, I’m wrong, maybe he is injured, but I know of one person who turned his back from Bafana, in fact more than one, remember Quinton Fortune? Yeah, that lad that played for Man United, yeap! At one point he felt he didn’t need to play for Bafana as his club career was more important than his country. But, answer me this, where is he today? Do you ever read about him in the papers like before? The bottom line is, he turned his back on his country and today he’s paying the price. Another one that could be drawn into the equation is none other than Benni McCarthy, but the latter has had a recent sudden change of heart, obviously with the 2010 World Cup in mind.
What should be done about this behavior from ’senior’ players who pick and choose games they want to play for Bafana when they think they are on top of the world?
Leave your comment; I want to hear how you feel about this, as it sure disturbs me.

Lets wait and see how long it takes him to come back to action…If he is indeed injured..He will skip a number of important Premiership games,…But then again we know what is going to happen..FIFA stipulates that players need to report for camp even if injured so that they can be evaluated by the national associations Doctors..Guess what happened last time..Skillo never turned up for the medical examination and SAFA let that go as usual…

Very true Tity, I think SAFA plays a big role in disciplining players when they behave this way, they can just let things go without addressing the issue

SAFA is a dog that does not have teath. It is very linient in dealing with such issues. I doupt if Pinaar is injured and they a cooking a story about him being injured. I think that SA should ban these big headed players from playing in a home world cup and that would solve this problem.
